around the blue ridge, shenandoah valley, 50s as well as much of the mountain region of west virginia. we have a clear skies over haze in the air. there's the sun up. our nearest star on the eastern horizon from the vantage point of 300 feet up on our tower. right now low to mid-60s in the metro area. by 9:00, mid-70s. by noon time, near 806789 by midafternoon, make it briefly into the low to mid-80s but not a very humid day today. humidity at bay again. we'll take a look at the night planner in 10 minutes at around 6:11. now let's check the monday morning commute. jerry, how is it looking now? >> good morning. chopper 4 over the scene of the accident that occurred just moments ago. i-95 southbound before you get to route 198. we are told the two left lanes are currently closed. the fire department just pulled up on the scene right now. those of you coming south from

32 down to 198, heads-up for that. we'll keep you updated on that. several stretches heavy and slow traffic. travel lanes open all the way to the beltway and beyond. top side of the beltway, volume both directions. inner loop will become to the sunshine before long. travel lanes are open. out on the rails this morning, continuing issues over on vre. 300 and 302 are delayed because of issues. no delays metro, no delays marc. 6:02 now. a boy was shot in the leg in what appears to be a drive-by shoot anything southeast washington. it happened 11:30, 3400 block of minnesota avenue southeast. police say the victim's friend carried him home. a passer-by saw them and called 911. the victim is 13 years old. he is expected to be okay. police are looking for suspects. 6:02 is the time.

arson investigators are looking into a fire that damaged an apartment building in the 5100 block of f street sometime between 10:00 and 11:00 last night. one man was seriously injured and taken to the hospital. a firefighter was also injured, suffering minor burns to his face. he was taken to the hospital and treated and rhee re leased. today a former d.c. mayoral candidate will speak out about his allegations about vincent gray's administration. suleman brown is expected to testify before the d.c. council committee investigating the gray administration's hiring practices. brown says gray's aides promised him a job and paid him to stay in last year's race and level attacks against adrian tpepbt y. he has copies of money orders he received as proof of claims. gray and his aides deny the allegations. also today, the district's attorney general will discuss his office's investigation of d.c. council member harry thomas. tim day, who went against

thomas, accuses him of running a fake non-profit and khraeufpls thomas has been raising money for team thomas for year but never said how the money is being spent. the group isn't registered as a nonprofit with the irs. thomas says day is trying to run a smear campaign against him >> police say alcohol was a factor in a crash that killed three people in prince george's county on route 210 in fort washington early yesterday morning. a black gmc yukon hit the back of a gray mazda. it threw two women from the car, killing both of them. 55-year-old jean johnson and 55-year-old gwendolyn denvy. the driver could face additional charges. this morning divers will be back in the water searching for a 21-year-old swimmer. bruce yantzen disappeared friday

night. he is presumed drowned. he was swimming with two others near route 97 when the water got really deep pretty fast. rescuers say he panicked and another swimmer tried to save him but could not. officials remind everyone that swimming is not allowed in the reservoir in that area. right now firefighters are trying to contain a raging wildfire in arizona. it's burned more than 144,000 acres in the last week. firefighters from across the country are now in new mexico to help battle the fire. but strong wind gusts and high temperatures are making that difficult. some homeowners say the flames moved so quickly and gave them no time to gather their belongings. and when i got down in there another sheriff came up and said i have to get out. i said i have an escort. he said you have to leave now because the fire was right there. so we had to turn around and leave. rising smoke from the fire can be seen from more than 150

miles away in southern colorado. this so-called wallow fire is the largest in history. the midwest is bracing for flooding right nowment reservoirs are nearly full in iowa. so the army corps of engineers is opening flood gates to release excess water. many homeowners are trying to protect their property with sandbags. others are getting evacuation orders to leave. seven midwest states are under a flood emergency. we're following a developing story out of pakistan where a series of u.s. drone strikes killed at least 16 suspected insurgents. the first two missiles struck minutes apart in the tribal district of south waziristan. one was a compound where a top al qaeda leader was killed in another attack three days earlier.

how's traffic? tom, good morning. good morning, everyone. i-95 maryland commuters, listen up. chopper 4 over the scene of the accident that occurred just a short time ago. you're looking at live pictures i-95 southbound before you get to route 198 in laurel. it's the two left lanes that are closed. two lanes squeeze by to the right. already we're told somewhere in the vicinity of a three-mile backup which puts it south of 216. those of you that normally use the i-95 corridor southbound trying to get to the beltway in college park, heads-up. it is backed up only because of this accident. you may want to consider 29 or route 1 as an alternate. one of our newer cameras on the built way off the woodrow wilson bridge. there's the wilson bridge span right there. right now moving nicely. both directions looking good around 295. and head out and see how we're doing.

welcome back at 6:15. today german officials expect to get test results confirming the source of the deadly e. coli outbreak. officials now say vegetable sprouts caused the outbreak. they are from an organic farm in northern germany that has now been shut down. they were served at four

restaurants over the last month. 22 deaths are being blamed on the e. coli. 22 people have become sick, including four americans. they got sick while travel anything germany. today the former chief of the international monetary fund will be in court for arraignment. he is accused of sexually assaulting a hotel housekeeper in new york city. he is expected to bleed not guilty to attempted rape, sexual abuse and other charges. we could hear big surprises from the defense. >> the defense is going to try to say in open court what it can't say in the media and going to let the world know who his defense will be. >> he is on house arrest. he resigned after his arrest last month. we'll likely see new developments in decision 2012 today. rick santorum is expected to announce he is running for president. he is expected to make the

announcement not far from coal mines where his grandfather once worked. he's expected to be in a republican debate in new hampshire next week. listen how sarah palin explained at a stop in boston during her one nation bus tour. >> you know, he who -- warned the british that they weren't going to be taking away our arms by ringing those bells and making sure as he is riding his horse through town to send the warning shots and bells that we were going to be secured and we were going to be free. >> historical paul revere website has a different story. it said he rode through lexington on a secret mission to warn adams and hancock that british troops were marching to arrest them. palin told chris wallace on fox news sunday, quote, part of his ride was to warn the british that were already there, that, hey, you're not going to succeed, you're not going to take american arms, you are not

going to beat our own well-armed persons, individual, private militia we have. she went on to say gotcha i answered candidly. i know my american history. 67 years ago today allied beaches stormed normandy, france in world war ii. general dwight eisenhower gave the go ahead for d-day, the largest military amphibious military operation in u.s. the u.s. joined its western allies with a total of 155,000 troops on the beaches in normandy. the operation was a success but hundreds of brave men lost their lives in the battle to free europe. today pepco crews will work to finish repairs on underground cables in northeast d.c. that lost power last week. the cables are on north capital street between l and m and pierce between north capital and 1st street. a section of the curb lane on north capital at the intersection of l will be closed

just near 60 degrees. arlington county, low to mid-60s. mid-60s in fairfax. weather watchers reporting from the northern neck of virginia. jan has been a weather watcher with us for almost 30 years. she continues to faithfully report the observations there on the bay and northern neck. elsewhere around the bay, mid-six there. other weather watchers reporting faithfully in the blue ridge, shenandoah valley, they are reporting temperatures there generally in the 50s to near 60 degrees. a little bit of haze around the blue ridge as well as off into the mountains. there's the haze over washington. that is a live pick from tour camera. you can see the eastern sky flooded with that haze from the sunlight. and we'll have the temperatures by 9:00 near mid-70s. by noon time, up around 80. not a very humid day today. a bit of humidity in the air. it will be reaching mid-80s by

midafternoon. overnight, 70s through the evening. by dawn tomorrow down into the low six as we start off tuesday morning. and another day tomorrow similar to today, although it may be a little bit hotter but still not the big humidity that will likely begin to move in. does look like wednesday and thursday oppress it heat and humidity. afternoon highs in the mid and upper 90s. probably feeling like 100 or so when you factor humidity both days with hazy sunshine. then end of the week, though, it looks like a break from the high heat and the big humidity as well. we may get scattered showers and thundershowers around mainly friday afternoon. highs around 90. a bit cooler by the weekend. both days a chance of passing mainly afternoon thunderstorms. now let's check the monday morning commute. how is it looking, jerry? >> quite the mess this morning. i-95 southbound in maryland. authorities are dealing with an accident just before the interchange of route 198.

for a while the two left lanes are closed just a moment ago. everything got pushed to the shoulder. lanes are open. still activity on the shoulder. delays as you head south from route 216. it is stop and go all the way down to route 198. if you get on i-95 from 198 you'll get on after the accident scene. before that it is jammed up. good news or improving news, lanes have reopened even though there's activity on the shoulder. head over and see how we're doing on i-270. pockets of congestion this morning, which is typical this time of the morning. right down here at the split, no worry. 270 spur. northbound. everything generally moving along quite nicely. for those of you going to be traveling along i-66, no sunshine delays. significant backup because the sun. it's not volume. out on the rails this morning, no delays on metro. two continuing delays on vre,

welcome back at 6:256789 william and kate apparently don't want to be affiliated with the new image of the terminator. according to the british newspaper "the telegraph" the royal couple canceled a meeting with arnold schwarzenegger. they were supposed to meet the the former california governor during their visit to los angeles next month. once word got out about his affair with the housekeeper, those plans changed. schwarzenegger said there was never a meeting scheduled. today former cbs evening news and "today" show anchor katie couric is expected to announce her new television talk show. wall street journal and "new york times" said she decided to go with a talk show on abc. after talks with several talks broke down, including with nbc. coming up next at 6:30, the crime spree on a local bike trail, but there is a bigger

heat up as well. better enjoy today and tomorrow. meteorologist tom kierein says later in the week it will be down right uncomfortable to be outside. another heat wave will be here. good morning. welcome back to news 4 today. i'm joe krebs. >> i'm eun yang. it is monday, june 6th, 2011. enjoy today, right, tom? >> last week we got a taste of it. >> we did. >> soared to 98. that was a record for the day last wednesday. we'll repeat that again maybe this coming wednesday. but right now it's pleasant. we are down into the low to mid-60s throughout much of the region. 66 at reagan national. but we do have a little bit of haze in the air and patchy fog. and you see that area in green, those temperatures are mainly in the 50s right now from western maryland into the northern part of west virginia as well as the shenandoah valley in virginia. around the bay, eastern shore, around 60 degrees. over the haze, a mostly clear sky. we'll have hazy sunshine this morning. a live picture from sky watcher camera. this time we're looking toward

395 to the 14th street bridge, travel lanes open there. and we will head out and update you. for those of you traveling along north capital street approaching new york avenue, you may find curb lanes partially tied up as pepco continues those repairs we've been talking about. out to the trains we go. metro, no delays. vre, fredericksburg 300 and 302 slightly delayed, about 20 minutes or so. marc, no delays. joe? jerry, thanks very much. you may want to leave a little early for work on wednesday morning if you take the 14th street bridge. the traffic pattern will khaeufpbg again overnight as prt of the two-year reconstruction project. it will shift to the right center lane of the north half of the bridge. three lanes routed to the left and one lane to the right. this is the final phase of the bridge project which should be completed this coming fall. breaking news in centreville fairfax county. police are on the scene of a

stabbing on braddock springs road. police tell us at least one person was killed. two other people are in the hospital. we do not know their conditions at this point. we do have a crew on the way to the scene right now. we will bring you more information throughout the morning. also getting word of breaking news in iraq. the u.s. military says five u.s. soldiers were killed today. in a brief statement the military would not say how they died. the names of deceased are being withheld pending notification of their families. a man is in jail charged with drunk driving after a deadly accident in prince george's county. this occurred on route 210 in fort two washington wa and killed three people. a black gmc yukon hit the back of a gray mazda. it threw two women from the car, killing them both. 55-year-old gwendolyn denvy. the driver of the car, jean johnson, was also killed. the driver could face additional charges.

d.c. police are investigating a string of assaults on a hiking, and biking and jogging trail in northeast washington. this 1 1/2 mile stretch known as the met branch trail opened last year. the trail is eight miles long, running from silver spring to union station. it runs along the b&o railroad tracks. there are areas rather isolated. wooded areas, areas with high brush and spots with just not a lot of activity. these are areas where the assaults have been occurring. the stretch that runs between new york avenue and rhode island avenue. in one of the incidents one of the victims said they were tased by the person that robbed then. another incident, someone suffered a broken wrist in a robbery.

so police are asking people to be extremely careful when usinging this trail, especially in those isolated spots. and they're also recommending people not use the trail alone if you are hiking or jogging or riding your bike, go with other people. they're trying to figure out whether one person is responsible for these incidents or whether several people are preying on people using this trail. police are investigating, still looking for information from the public. again, anyone using the trail you're asked to be very careful especially on this one and a half mile stretch. back to you all in the studio. >> megan mcgrath reporting live. thanks very much. police are looking for the motive behind the murder of a local semi pro football recruiter. ralph thomas of temple hills was shot and killed friday night in mckinley tech high school's parking lot in northeast washington. crawford from landover is charged with his death. thomas helped recruit players

for the d.c. falcons, a semi pro football team that often plays at mckinley tech. some community leaders say it might have been over a woman. >> whatever it may be, it really wasn't worth taking a life, especially not in this fashion and the way it happened. he's a young guy. it seems like he was doing a lot of good things with the team. whatever the reason was, it's definitely not worth it. >> thomas's mother said her son was a father of four and ex-marine. . richmond phillips faces first degree murder charges of the death of juan net ta wright. she was found dead thursday night in prince george's county. her daughter, who would have turned 1 year old today, was found dead nearby in her suv. wright maintained phillips is the girl's father. prosecutors are waiting for autopsy results before deciding whether to charge phillips with the baby's death as well. right now in arizona, firefighters are battling one of

accusations. >> reporter: he will indeed appear before city council today, something they've been trying to get him to do since march. he says he has evidence to back up his claims in the form of money orders. suleman brown has been an elusive figure at the center of election controversy and said federal investigators told him to limit what he says. and congressional overnight committee and attorney's office looking into brown's allegations. he was promised a job and paid by the gray campaign to keep up on his attacks by the other opponent fenty. brown had indeed been given a six-figure job and he was fired earlier this year around february at the time the allegations became known. it did open up a can of worms involving the gray administration's hiring practices. there's been a committee all week on that. gray is a point person on personnel issues denied any quid

german officials expect to get tests back. vegetable sprouts caused the deadly outbreak in europe. they came from an organic farm in northern germany. it has been since shut down. at least 22 deaths are blamed on the e. coli. more than 2,200 people have become sick, including four americans. those americans got sick after traveling to germany. later today apple will unveil its next big thing. cnbc bertha coombs joins us with more on the i-cloud. >> it's a very big thing. steve jobs in fact, will be taking to the stage at apple's worldwide developers conference in san francisco. he's expected to unveil the i-cloud which let's users store media online and play them with any apple cloud. it will make itunes even stronger against rivals like google and amazon trying to muscle in on that action. it will show off the newest operating system for the mac and the iphone. how are your suits holding

paris. it features two passenger decks and 538 seats. air france is combining two flights into one with the larger jet saving 20% in operating costs. the flight between paris and washington is scheduled for june 16th. the plane that landed on the hudson river is making its way through maryland to its final destination. it hit a snag in new jersey. it got stuck turning a street corner. crews took out streetlights and part of a fence so the truck could move through. once it reaches the baltimore area it will head west on interstate 70 and 68 into west virginia. the plane is on its way to north carolina where it will be on display in an aviation museum. that will be some sight to see. >> yeah. that would be a lot of sight to see coming down the highway. let's get the forecast now from tom. >> a day for short sleeves and no polyester. we'll be starting off this

morning with a cool start, though. but later today you'll be comfortable in short sleeves. quite a luminous sky with haze around. reagan national, it's 66. and in prince george's county, temperatures there now are in the low 60s. it's right near 60, montgomery. arlington, fairfax. 50s farther west, shenandoah, western maryland, much of west virginia. eastern shore, a few locations away from the waters near 60. right on the waters in the mid and upper 60s. we have a clear sky over the haze. high pressure pushing in on a northwesterly flow. there is that haze in the sky. live view from the sky watcher camera. american university in the foreground in northwest washington. you can see a fog bank over the potomac river. way off in the distance lost in the haze is fairfax county. by 9:00, mid-70s. by noon time, 80. not very humid. sunset 8:30. after that we'll be in the mid-70s. mid-60s by dawn tomorrow.

during the day on tuesday, afternoon highs climbing to near 90 degrees. but still not very, very humid. not quite as humid as we'll probably see on wednesday and thursday. by then we will have sweltering oppressive humidity with highs  reaching the mid and upper 90s both afternoons. and hazy sunshine. then into the week we'll get a break from the heat. and scattered showers and thunderstorms are possible late on friday. and off and on over the weekend as well with highs in the 80s. now last week i was on vacation. climbed up to the top of compton peak. took this photographs along skyline drive. this is looking west. this was on friday morning about 10:00 in the morning looking west over the shenandoah valley. and if you have the time, take it. head off to the shenandoah national park. there are wonderful trails all around on skyline drive. let's check traffic this morning. tom, i was on vacation. i walked to the refrigerator. i'll show you pictures of that tomorrow.

one person was killed in an apartment on braddock springs road. two other people are in the hospital. we have a crew on the way to the scene. we'll bring you more information throughout the morning. also word of breaking news in iraq. u.s. military says five u.s. soldiers were killed today. this is the single largest loss of life for the american military for iraq in the past two years. the names of the soldiers are being withheld pending notification of families. other stories we're following. a man faces drunk driving charges after he killed two people in prince george's county. two women were ejected from the car. both were killed, along with the driver. streets in northeast d.c. will be closed as pepco crews are work to go repair underground cables on north capital street.
